Arriving in Egypt

When you arrive

When you arrive the first thing you need to do is get your visa (see visa section).

Then you’ll need to get a taxi to your destination. When you leave the terminal there will be a rush of taxi drivers trying to sit you down in their taxis. The best thing to do is ignore them and catch your breath for a second. Then, one by one taxi drivers will approach you so try and bargain with them as best you can. Taxi fares to Nasr City will cost around 50LE/$8/£5, but you can get it for cheaper if you have the energy to bargain with an Egyptian who sees you as a big bag of $.

Hotels for the Night

As most students will need some time to rest and sleep before finding accommodation, a cheap hotel is always a cost effective option until you settle in. Inexpensive hotels, hostels and pensions are concentrated in downtown Cairo, mainly on the higher floors of office buildings on and around Sharia (meaning ‘street’) Talaat Harb.

Here are two decently priced hotels I found Arabian Nights Hotel and Juliana-hotel, however there are many more hotels but you’ll have to search around for them.

If you’re looking to stay in a hostel then HostelWorld is worth a look.
